MECKERING Earthquake - 50th Year Commemorative event
The Meckering earthquake which occurred on 14 October 1968, remains one of the most significant seismic events in Australia’s history in terms of damage to infrastructure and the subsequent cultural upheaval.
This year is the 50th Anniversary of the earthquake and to mark this occasion, the community of Meckering will host a large festival in our town centre.
Thanks to Lotterywest, the Shire of Cunderdin and the generosity of local businesses who have sponsored the event, we are able to offer a large range of free entertainment and attractions for visitors. There will be live music throughout the day, food stalls, carnival rides and Scitech science shows just to name a few.
This is a really significant event for our community. It is a chance to remind people of the history of the town and to showcase the earthquake tourist attractions that we have on offer.
