Deputy Prime Minister launches first WSFN roadworks

WSFN working group media release

Members of the Wheatbelt Secondary Freight Network (WSFN) working group were pleased to welcome the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack to officially launch the first roadworks project to commence under the WSFN program. On Wednesday 19th February, dignitaries and invited guests travelled to the Mogumber-Yarawindah Road in the Shire of Victoria Plains to celebrate this momentous occasion.

The WSFN program addresses local government controlled roads in the Wheatbelt Region that large (Restricted Access Vehicles) are permitted to use. Most of these roads are narrow, unsealed and unsuited to large volumes of freight vehicles. Of the 80 secondary freight routes comprising 4400 kms, the programs proposed works have identified 2850 kms (65%) that are prioritised for upgrades.

In March 2019 the Federal Government announced a $70 million commitment through the Roads of Strategic Importance (ROSI) initiative for the WSFN. This important program of works is essential to supporting key freight supply chains throughout the Wheatbelt. The WA Government and the 42 Shires across the Wheatbelt have committed $17.5 million.

WSFN Chairman Mr Rick Storer said “This initiative is a result of a collaborative approach in working together for a common goal. All participants, including the 42 Wheatbelt Shires, are to be congratulated on their active participation in this program that has been recognised as the biggest local government collaboration in Australia”

“Today’s launch is the culmination of years of hard work and commitment from a number of volunteers and groups.  On behalf of the Wheatbelt Shires, residents and businesses I express our thanks and appreciation” said Mr Storer.
